Texas flooded, credit crisis, 'people are struggling'
Hi, this is Inky_Jewel, I am filling in today so this will be SHORT. The big news is that gas prices went to over $7 a gallon. The storm in Texas is one reason but the suspension of credit is the main reason, there are meetings in Washington about it. Basically you can't use a credit card to buy fuel anymore, you have to pay cash.
HURRICANE FELIX
You all know it came ashore near Galveston and flooded it and also caused floods in Houston. But first he tore loose several oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. One of them sank. So the situation is pretty bad down there. We are waiting for reports. I am glad it did not hit RedHatty again (she got only rain) but it did hit a lot of people.
There was rain up north too, and bad floods.
BILLIONS IN OIL STOLEN
MonkeyWithoutOil is reporting it from the news sources. I saw this in my paper this week too. Des says that actually the U.S. Government has been stealing it, it's been going to Saudi Arabia through a supposedly unused pipeline. (He even knows which pipeline - he showed me on a map this was last month) Because the Saudis have been running short on oil but wanted to hide it to prevent panic.
DALLAS IS BURNING.
This is the kind of report that Mom doesn't want me to read.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY
I am saying that to MiaWithoutOil, who lives in Bristol and her birthday was last week. She turned 16 and I will turn 16 on August 15. I know what she is talking about because things are not good with my family either, we are not holding together too well.
I AM WORRIED
About Anda, Janey, Josef and Shae. I hope they come out okay.
WE NEED TRAINS
Everyone says that the answer is for us to use mass transit. Like in Philadelphia. But now we know that we can't actually use it because we don't even have the trains. And where do we get trains? From Europe and Japan, mostly! We don't even make them here anymore. It's crazy!
FALLINGINTOSIN
She's in Clarksville, which is near Louisville. She is reporting that there are cars abandoned all over, and we are seeing that even in our neighborhood. Dad says people park them here to hide them from the repo men. Fallingintosin will have a mission for people in Louisville, so stay tuned!
BICYCLES
What we are seeing around here is that every single bike is getting fixed up and used. People watch them like they were made of gold, they take them with them into stores and everything and nobody says a word. Tonomel says students fixing up lots of bikes in Bloomington too.
I GOT A B IN FRENCH
But I can't translate this, sorry!!. We have a lot of posts (look at the pink box on this page!) from Meredith Stapleton and hope someone can help us with telling us generally what they say? You can email it to wwo@worldwithoutoil.org.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR STORIES
If you don't know, people send us their stories about life in the crisis, and we put them up so everyone can share them. They can be blog posts or emails or images or phone calls or videos, I really like videos like this one from fallingintosin. Or this phone call from Pachy! So let me know whats going on with YOU.
